Avila Beach

Avila Beach is a small, secluded unicorporated community of approximately 1,627 people. It is located on San Luis Obisbo Bay, about 160 miles from Los Angeles and about 200 miles south of San Francisco. Because the beach is sheltered by Point San Luis on the west side and Fossil Point to the east (the elevation of Point San Luis breaks up the northwesterly winds), the locale is usually warmer than other area beaches.

Avila Beach enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climeate and the temperatures vary little during the year. The rainy season is during the Winter, December through March.

Avila Beach has 3 piers. The Avila Beach Pier is 1, 685 feet long, and is open to tourist pedestrians and recreational fishing. There is a commercial fishing pier for local fishermen and Cal Poly SLO has a pier for research, which is not accessible to general public. The piers are also a great vantage point for watching Gray Whales and Humpback whales.
